Recipe & Food Reviews

Here is a page where I review recipes that I’ve tried, tell you my opinion, and what I would have done differently next time (if there is a next time!)  Check back often!

By Dashing Dish

So, as most of you know, the infamous Dashing Dish is my sister!!  This weekend, she was over my house and one of our favorite things to do together is cook!  {This = great improvements! (she used to not let me near the kitchen… but now, she sees a “glimmer of hope” in me) }  One of her recent posts was how to make “healthy hummus”.  I jumped up and down {kinda, not really} when I saw this… because I LOVE dips, of any kind.  But dip=calories.  So I tried my hand at making hummus for the FIRST time.  [Take note: Although Katie stood by, it was all me!]  Here’s the recipe:

  • 1 (15oz) can of chickpeas
  • 1/2 cup nonfat Greek yogurt
  • 1-2 cloves of garlic, minced (or 1-2 tsp garlic powder)
  • 1/4 tsp pepper
  • salt to taste
  • 2 tbs lemon juice
  • 1 tbs tahini~ (this is optional, and will give it that ‘traditional hummus’ taste, but if I don’t have it on hand, it still tastes great without it!)

Here’s my review:

Well to start, it was INCREDIBLY easy, uses very few ingredients, is protein packed, can be used on just about anything, and tastes yummy!

I used an immersion blender to blend it all together {instead of getting out the bulky food processor}, which worked great!  At first taste, it tasted bland.  Katie is a seasoning [freak], and after she tasted it, she said, oh yea… load up the garlic! So I did…I added tablespoon by tablespoon of minced garlic.  With each taste, it yummier and yummier.  The only problem, my mouth was burrrrrning.  The key to this recipe is to add seasonings to your liking.  I also added {which you can see in the picture}, a 1/3 of a can of white beans. Another addition: Sesame seeds.  This was instead of Tahini, which still gave it that same great hummus flavor!  This thickened it up a bit and made a great added flavor.  In the end, after pouring into a bowl, I realized {I totally forgot to add lemon juice!}  No wonder it lacked flavor!  I might add it before I eat it, and stirrr it up.

My rating: Two thumbs up!

Way to go Dashing Dish! Next on my list to make: Pita chips!
